As a child, I grew up in a house of seven children. My mother worked full time at a factory but we were always considered living below the poverty level because of her low income. We suffered the most in the area of health. We received minimal care because some health concerns were covered by her insurance and state insurance and others were not. We also receieved minimal care because of her mind set of how she was raised. In her childhood, they received medical attention only a few times in her childhood and this carried over to our childhood. We had to wait until we were adults with, health insurance to receive regular checkups at the dentist and to receive yearly health exams. Our family coped by using home remedies, and adjusting to rotten or stacked teeth.
Grenada, a region in the Carribbean, has a high rate of poverty and low health care. These stressors are due to a large population of single family homes and high teenage pregnancy rate. Many mothers are left to raise children on their own because the fathers had to leave to find work outside of the region. The country has developed a Medium- Term Economic plan that is hoped to stimulate the economy by promoting tourism, agriculture and agro-manufacturing that will keep families together, and decrease the teenage pregnancy rate to help drive down the poverty rate.
